The shore fishing on the Outerbanks, both in the surf and in
the sound, has always been notorious for running red hot or stone
cold. Stories abound on the Outerbanks about days of old when the
fish were so thick you could walk on them. Well, Sunday (12/10/00)
will be one of those days that they will talk about for a long time to
come.
On Sunday, Green Island Slough (south side of Oregon Inlet) ran red hot with speckled trout. They caught them from the boats, they caught them from the bridge, they caught them wading, and they caught them from the shore. Some anglers caught and released over 100 fish. Hundreds of fish over four pounds were caught, and dozens of fish were pushing the scale over 6 pounds. With the strong coldfront that is due to push over the coast today, I would keep a sharp eye on the Pea Island and Rodanthe surf as soon as the weather moderates. The slough just north of Rodanthe pier has been holding fish. Back in the Sound, the Manns Harbor Bridge continues to fish well for striped bass up to 25 inches. Fly rod catches of one to two hundred fish per boat are still common. The biggest fish are holding deep, fast sinking lines are needed to get your fly down through all the smaller fish if you want to pull on the larger ones. Up in the Kitty Hawk surf, speckled trout and puppy drum are being taken from the slough just north of the pier. The best bite has been two hours past the top of the tide.
