New Bern and Trent River Summer is just around the corner, yet no one told the stripers to move down into the sound. The Rock, as they are called here, are under the Freedom Bridge (Trent River) and the Swing Bridge (Car Bridge into Downtown New Bern). The spawning of the river crabs is in full bloom. Just in case you didn't know. The male crab craddles the female and then falls backwards from the pilings into the welcome mouths of stripers. Most of the big stripers are on their way to Raleigh, but a few stragglers are hanging on the bridge fenders to take advantage of some mighty tasty snacks. Greens Creek - Oriental The speckled trout fishing has never turned off. The bend at Greens and Kershaw are holding 3-4 pound trout and in the upper reaches where there is gin clear water you'll find some large gar (see TIDE magazine for the poop on catching Gar on fly). Any fly angler worth his weight should consider the Gar as a potential challenge. They will hit just about any fly put in front of them and they run large here. Adams Creek to South River Redfish are showing up on the south side of the bars in shallow sandy and grass lined bottoms. Haven't seen any tailing fish but that is just around the corner with the warming of the water. Water is very clear and there is a lot of wading opportunities especially in front of Turnagain Bay and into West Bay. Turnagain to North Bay and Cedar Island This is a picture perfect area for wade fishing or poling in the shallows near Little Swan or Raccoon Island. The spanish have just started to show up and we have also seen some large redfish.
Have fun, be safe, enjoy our great outdoors and don't teach your trash to swim ~ Capt. Doug Sinclair.
