Capt. Rob Blake's fishing report from Florida's Mosquito Lagoon and Upper Indian River-updated April 21st, 2003.

Water levels on the Mosquito Lagoon have been on the rise this past week and the fishing action is heating up along the Mosquito Lagoon. We're coming off a full moon period, so hold on -the fishing is certainly going to be on the upswing as the new moon period approaches.

Redfish, Black Drum, and Spotted Seatrout have all been bending a rod over the past ten days. Most catches of redfish have been in the upper slot (18"-27") limit with a few nice ones in the 15-pound range. Black Drum have also shown themselves on the flats and a careful presentation with bait has produced some 12-35 pound fish out of 18-24 inches of water. The biggest trout catch of the week was 6 pounds and was fooled by a soft plastic jerkbait. Some of the redfish came on top water chuggers, but the majority were caught on live shrimp and soft plastics.

The early riser will enjoy plenty of tailing redfish at sunrise if you are in the right area. Look for mid-morning reds to be settled into the depressions adjacent to flats and drop-offs. While the early morning reds are fairly easy to fool with most any lure/bait, the settled fish respond best to shrimp or cut mullet.

Fly fisherman have been doing very well early AM with the tailing reds. Often the fly isn't in the water more than a second before a red charges over to inhale it. Those days with good visibility (sunshine) have proven very exciting along backwater shorelines!

Spring is certainly upon us…don't miss it!
