Sarasota Fishing Report for 11/26 through 12/3/2000

Bonito attack! Anglers on the Snook Fin-Addict had great coastal gulf action with a variety of species, particularly bonito (little tunny).  Fly and spin anglers also caught Spanish mackerel and cobia just off Lido Key.  Pompano and permit were caught on shrimp-tipped jigs drifting the passes.  On deep grass flats, the best action was with  ladyfish, trout, bluefish and jack crevalle.

Norm and Francie Boardman, from Sarasota, caught ladyfish and trout with me on Wednesday fishing deep grass flats just inside the passes on Cotee jigs
and Clouser flies.  They fished breaking Spanish mackerel and bonito for a couple of hours off Lido Beach before the action subsided.  Norm managed several mackerel, a bonito and a cobia on small gray over white Clouser flies fished on a fast sinking fly line.  Francie also landed several Spanish mackerel on Diamond jigs on spinning tackle.

Mike Willard, from Bradenton, FL, and Dave Gay, from Oneco, FL, fished north Sarasota Bay and Terra Ceia Bay with me on Friday.  They landed several trout, ladyfish a bluefish and a redfish on DOA's, Cotee jigs and a gold spoon.

The best action of the week was with Brett and Debbie Yantis from Parkville, MO.  They fished the coastal gulf waters off Lido Key with me on Saturday and caught and released 4  bonito to 10 pounds on Crease flies.  One bonito was landed on a Cotee jig on spinning tackle.  We fished breaking bonito for 3 hours before the action finally subsided.  At one point, bonito were driving glass minnows up on the Big Pass bar and feeding in less than 3 feet of water.

I look for continued good action with Spanish mackerel, bonito and tripletail in the coastal gulf waters, if the weather does not turn too cold. On deep grass flats, inside the bay, the action should be best for ladyfish, jack crevalle and catch and release trout.
