   Crisfield, Maryland  10/18/00

Well, folks, you good not have asked better weather this past week and weekend especially for October.  Over the 4 days I was on the water this week the fishing has been fantastic with the exception of one slower day on Thursday.   It has been a matter of the right time & right place on some days, but overall the Striper fishing has been really good in the shallows from Janes Island south to Foxes.  Although a lot of the fish are schoolies, a great majority of them are 18-19 inches.  A couple this weekend ranged to 24" with one weighing in at nearly 5 pounds.

The Speckled Trout have remained rather elusive but we were fortunate to pick up at least one each day with the largest so far measuring only 17.5".   The Bluefish are still quite abundant at the Puppy Hole and scattered in other areas as well with most ranging 14-18".   This is shaping up to be a great fall both weather wise and fishing, I only hope that it will continue well into Nov. and provide us with even bigger fish in the coming weeks.

A tip to remember that I have found to be most reliable the past several days is when the water is super clear with bright skies, downsizing your lure or fly will increase your chances of catching.  When possible try to position your boat so that your casting into the direction of the sun or if the sun is to your back make longer casts and to the side of the area your targeting. I've noticed many times with bright & clear conditions the fish are following the lure for a considerable distance only to shy away when seeing the boat or your shadow.  Also take note as the sun gets lower in the afternoon you can up-size your lure (such as a 4" Sassy Shad or 5" Bass Assassin) to try for some of the larger fish. The most productive lure lately has proven to be a 4" white or pearl twister tail or a 5" white "Cactus Striper Fly" (also considered a crystal-bugger).

Wishing everyone tight lines & bent rods till next time...
