Boca Grande Fl
8 Jan 2006

A little cold weather showed up last night.  Not unusual for January, and it won't last long.  Looks like another great week in front of us.  The fishing will be excellent for seatrout and redfish in the back country.  Sheephead and mangrove snapper will dominate the bridges, deep rocky areas and docks.  There will be a few flounder around the hard bottom channels and some on the flat.  Off shore Boca Grande has been a little choppy, so I have not been there all week.  As soon as we get some calm seas, I'll be looking for tripletail and cobia in the harbor and near shore around any structure I can find.

Fishermen with me this week did well on seatrout with an occasional redfish or snook.  Dave Hawkins and his dad-in-law John Biddinger fished early in the week under bright skies and over clear water.  Dave still managed a small slam with a bunch of trout, a small redfish and a pretty nice snook.

Ron Whitely, my regular fishing partner, and I beat the water to a froth over a large number of tailing redfish on Wednesday.  When Ron says "You just have to be smarter than the fish", I begin to wonder about those dead brain cells.

Had another spectacular day with Jess Jones from Longboat Key.  Jesse's favorite is ladyfish on a fly.  We started out with an eight weight and after 100 fish and five hours we finished with a light five weight.  Next time we're bringing the three.

That's enough for one week. Keep fishing.

Pete
