Capt. Barry Hoffman's fishing report
for the Upper Keys and Florida Bay flats and back country.
2nd week of August

Though fishing was a little slow over the past week, we still managed to find a few fish. Calixto Garcia and his wife Nan, caught 5 bonefish and had the Chinese fire drill going when we hooked two at one time. Fishing with Jim Brown and friend George, we managed 5 redfish on spin, with one double header.  Randy Robinson caught a few on fly as well. My good friend and long time client, Martin Davies from Nottingham England caught a decent Summer bonefish early, then we went back out with the boys and tangled with a bunch of scrappy seatrout and ladyfish. We had  a little competition with the local barracuda, who decided he wanted our fish. Jeff Miklas and I pulled a few hairs out while the bonefish gave us fits. We hooked three, but could not keep them hooked. The bonefish are getting smarter!  We did manage a cute juvenile tarpon, than caught three bull sharks from 50 to 125 pounds. I expect much of the same for the fishing the next few weeks. Bonefishing is best early, while the redfish seem happy to feed in the extremely warm water. (we had them feeding well in 92' water last week)
.... Practice your casting, you'll be a much luckier fisherman!   Barry  (www.flatsguide.com)
