Sarasota, FL Fishing Report for 9/2 through 9/9/2001

Anglers on the Snook Fin-Addict caught and released trout and tripletail in Sarasota Bay last week before red tide began to affect the fishing.  I spent the rest of the week fishing the flats of the Florida Keys with our fishing club, the Sarasota Sportfishing Anglers Club, where I participated in the Islamorada/Sarasota Shootout.  It is a fun fishing tournament that pits anglers from Sarasota against Islamorada anglers.

Scot and Sam McArtor, both from Sarasota, FL, and Gordon McArtor, from Ohio, fished Sarasota Bay with me last Sunday.  They caught trout to 16" on an avocado/red glitter DOA shrimp near Buttonwood Harbor and Long Bar.  The catch of the day was a 4-pound tripletail that Scot sight-fished with the same DOA shrimp.  We fished a couple of buoys in Sarasota Bay and did not locate any tripletail on them.  As we were pulling away from the second buoy, I noticed a palm frond floating about 50 feet away.  There was the tripletail!  After several casts, Scott put the DOA shrimp right in front of the fish and got an immediate hookup.

I spent Wednesday through Saturday fishing the flats of the Florida Keys with Doug Forde, from Sarasota, FL.   I caught and released a 27" tarpon in a creek mouth on an avocado/red glitter DOA shrimp on Thursday afternoon.  Doug landed a 21" bonefish on a weedless-rigged shrimp near Key Largo on Friday.

We each missed a bonefish with a fly on an olive bonefish Clouser on Saturday.  The hook pulled on Doug's fish and mine broke off.  The highlight of that day was when two permit came up on the flat we were fishing following a stingray.  Doug got a couple of good shots at them with a fly, but they did not bite.  The Sarasota Sportfishing Anglers Club won the Shootout for the third year in a row!

Red tide has moved into Sarasota Bay and has affected fishing there. However, there are still places to fish.  I plan to fish either Charlotte Harbor or Tampa Bay during the next week to avoid it.

Capt. Rick Grassett
