Furry Foam Crab |

This easy to tie crab imitation is a proven producer for redfish and black drum.
With the foam back trimmed tear drop shape it has all the proper diving characteristics of
a good permit fly. Being a bit paranoid about glue odors, I would be reluctant to
make this my first choice on a serious permit quest. I endeavor to tie any fly that used flexible adhesives well in advance of their initial use. After the glue has cured for at least day or two, I put them outside in the sun to cure for a full day. Then I store them indoors for several more day in an open container before using them for the first time. The first fly of this type with a foam back crab and palmered legs that I had ever seen was given to me be an angler who had been traveling in Florida. He did not know who to give credit for this pattern. The first published image of a fly tied in this style that I ever took note of, was a fly tied by John Kumiski. Tying details for the fly below are self evident, except for the legs. The legs are palmered and are not trimmed on the top or bottom, instead they are mashed into the glue on the bottom of the foam so that all are held in the horizontal plane. |
