Easy To Tie Crab Fly Pattern
Realistic Enough To Fool Even The Wariest
Redfish, Black Drum, Bonefish, or Permit

This easy to tie crab imitation is a proven producer for redfish and black drum.  With the foam back trimmed tear drop shape it has all the proper diving characteristics of a good permit fly.  Being a bit paranoid about glue odors (especially when permit fishing), I would be reluctant to make this my first choice on a serious permit quest; unless the fly is tied well (weeks) in advance, and has spent a day or two curing in the sun.

I endeavor to tie any fly that used flexible adhesives well in advance of their initial use.  After the glue has cured for at least day or two, I put them outside in the sun to cure for a full day.  Then I store them indoors for several more day in an open container before using them for the first time.

I developed this technique as a alternative method of tying a furry foam crab that had a similar appearance to fly pattern tied by Captain John Kumiski.

Tying details for the fly below are self evident, except for the legs.  The legs are palmered and are not trimmed on the top or bottom, instead they are mashed into the glue on the bottom of the foam so that all are held in the horizontal plane.
