Bucktail Deceiver (sunfish)

Call it what you like, it is a simple durable baitfish pattern constructed entirely with bucktail.  The fly pictured below is none the worse for ware of taking at least a dozen striped bass one afternoon on the Roanoke River.

Most assuredly it does not have the swimming action of traditional Deceiver, and it would not be my first choice in clear water.   This fly is big and bulky, and is hard to cast with a lot of wind in your face.   This fly pattern does present an easy to find target for gamefish in stained water.

I started tying this fly for use on coastal rivers where stripers and big largemouth bass will search around snags and shallow bars  for sunfish (bluegills).  It is most effective when cast round fallen timber close to shore.  The heavy mono weed guard is positioned for maximum hook protection.

The fly below is tied on a 2/0 Eagle Claw 254 SS.  Tying instructions are rather simple.  This fly is little more than a layering of "Deceiver" style collars.   Stick on eyes are set in epoxy.  Weed guard is a loop of 30 lb mono.
